Restorative Foods For Your Summer Plate
If you're anything like most of us summer sun seekers, at the end of the day you seek refreshment and hydration to restore your bodies optimal elasticity. This task goes beyond just slathering your skin with one specific product. In an ideal world you would work on providing your body with hydration and nutrients internally as well as externally.
Cherries are a summer favorite! Tart and Sweet, all natural benefits that work overtime to restore so much of what our aging bodies need. You might say wait a minute, I am young, I am not aging... well unfortunately we all encounter oxidative stress on the daily. No matter what age you are currently there are cells aging.
DID YOU KNOW?
Cherries are a good source of vitamin C, Potassium, fiber, and other nutrients your body needs to function optimally.
High concentration of plant compounds in cherries may be responsible for this fruit’s many health benefits. Though the amount and type can vary depending on the variety, all cherries are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. This high antioxidant content may help combat oxidative stress, a condition that is linked to multiple chronic diseases and premature aging.
So what else can this super fruit do? Studies show it can aid in reducing inflammation, and that tart cherry juice can in some cases help athletic performance for all you weekend warriors out there.
My personal favorite attribute would have to be the fact that Cherries help produce Melatonin which regulates your sleep cycle. What better way to restore your body than a good nights sleep.
Try this recipe next time you have a craving for something refreshing and restorative. It includes other skin foods like Watermelon which is fantastic for hydration and providing much needed Lycopene for your body.
Ingredients you will need:
1 cup ripe and fresh pitted cherries ( cut into small pieces)
1 cup yellow seeded watermelon (diced and deseeded)
4 stalks of basil leaves washed, dried and sliced thin or chopped
1 tablespoon of EVOO or I used Olivier Napa Valley Jalapeno Olive Oil
1 teaspoon of Jalapeno - if desired
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
De-pit cherries and chop, set aside and prep 1 cup watermelon add to cherries, slice or chop fresh basil and add to bowl with fruit. Add olive oil, salt and stir gently. Refrigerate for 15 mins and serve as desired. My family loves this over romaine lettuce, or served as lettuce cups. Throw over greek yogurt or serve with homemade seasoned pita chips. Enjoy!
One variation: use pineapple instead of watermelon
